Everyone has their list of favourite research resources, but I’ve found the longer mine gets, the less likely anyone is to use it. It’s amazing what people will tell you when you’re a form. The fastest, friendliest, free-iest way of knocking up a survey that anybody can fill in with a click. I bought one so I could make a t-shirt about wearing masks, and it was great fun to just muck about with a different medium. They make some very weird fonts, the main benefit of which is that it’s really unlikely you’ll see them anywhere else. (For the slightly more advanced version, see Figma.) Perfect for getting to that exact level of polish where any designer will know it wasn’t designed, but everyone else will think it was. A great way of drawing diagrams without leaning on a designer. Substack will make it look real so you can get on with the words. Start a newsletter, even if it only runs for five editions, and live that newspaper dream. I use it to keep a daily tiny journal, everything set to private, and it doesn’t expect me to do anything else. I know I get sucked in by these “It doesn’t have any features–ON PURPOSE!” apps, but CN really does feel liberating. A very very light blogging platform that takes two clicks and some typing to write an entry.

I used Twine to make my first game, about going shopping during lockdown, and it taught me a lot. Beyond that, you can create some incredible experiences on this platform if you put the time in. And it’s really easy – like, one-hour easy – to make something that just works.

(And look, if you want something you already have, have you ever tried just bashing out that difficult email in TextEdit / Notepad? It feels a bit like scratching something down on an envelope. Both have their merits, depending on your mood.
iA is like writing in a black void of nothing. Ommwriter is like writing in a yoga studio. Two different approaches to a writing pane here. Trying to get lots of people together but you haven’t decided when? Get Doodle to figure it out. A collaborative working and whiteboarding tool for when Zoom is just too narrow. Can’t guarantee it’s not part of the AdWords octopus, though. And there’s a fullscreen Chrome extension, so you don’t have to go near your gmail while getting things done. There are many to-do lists out there, but I like Google Tasks because it doesn’t also try to be a project manager or scheduler or whatever. Freedom blocks sites and apps of your choice, across all devices. So when it starts to feel the other way around, turn it off.
